40 Days of Listening (Aug 5- Sept 13, 2013)

God has done some amazing things during 40 day periods.

The Lord protected Noah‘s family during the 40 Days of torrential rain of the worldwide flood (Genesis 7:4, 12). Moses spent 40 days with the Lord on Mt. Sinai, fasting and receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 24:18; 34:28; Deut. 9:9). The 12 spies spied out the Promised Land for 40 days (Numbers 13:25; 14:34). Goliath mocked Israel for 40 Days until the Lord raised up David to defeat him and the Philistine army (1 Samuel 17:16). Jonah warned Ninevah that they would be destroyed in 40 days but they repented and were given more years of probation (Jonah 3:4). Jesus spent 40 Days in the wilderness being tempted by the devil at the beginning of His ministry (Luke 4:2) and spent another 40 Days with his disciples after His resurrection before ascending to heaven (Acts 1:3).

What can God do for the Richardson Seventh-day Adventist Church family in 40 Days? What if each of us set aside 40 Days and every one of those days we spent at least ten minutes listening to God in Bible study and prayer? What if some time during those 40 Days we got together with a group of our friends from church along with one of the pastors and an elder and talked and listened to each other about how to best carry out the mission God has given our church?

That’s the invitation and challenge of 40 Days of Listening, listening to God and each other about our God-given mission. The dates are Monday, August 5 through Friday, September 13, 2013. Please mark your calendars for this special time.

There are three parts to the 40 Days of Listening.

  1. Listening to God. Every believer is encouraged to spend at least ten minutes a day in personal Bible study and prayer. You might use the simple Bible Bookmark plan (August, September) or another plan of your choosing.
  2. Reflecting on God’s mission. All Richardson SDA Church family and friends are encouraged to fill out a 40 Days of Listening Reflection Sheet. You can give your Reflection Sheet to the Church Office or, better yet, bring it to one of many Listening Gatherings. Pastor Dan is planning to read every Reflection Sheet personally and discuss the overall results with the Church Board after the 40 Days.
  3. Listening Gatherings. Each gathering is a one hour program led by a pastor and elder that includes a devotional, testimonies and sharing time based on our reflection sheets. An optional 30 minute communion service or house blessing can be added. A Listening Gathering can take place at your home, workplace, school, restaurant, etc., in the morning, afternoon, evening or over a meal. The host picks the date and time, arranges for a location and invites friends.

Right now we are looking for dozens of hosts who will open their homes (or places of work) and invite friends over for a one hour listening gathering. If you are willing to host a listening gathering please email info@richardsonsda.org with 1-3 possible dates and times that will work for you between August 5 and September 13, morning, afternoon or evening or a mealtime. Once confirmed begin inviting your friends.

I’m excited about what God has already been doing. I believe during these 40 Days He will show us our next major steps in taking the Adventist message to all the DFW Mission Field and beyond.

Sign up to host, and stay tuned. Jesus is coming again soon!
